Everything You Wanted To Know About Construction Health And Safety

One of the most hazardous land based work environment in today's world is Construction. According to recently conducted survey, this industry records the highest number of fatal accidents in the domestic industrial sector. The risks involved in the construction industry are not unknown, but the problem lies in the fact that construction hazards are difficult to avoid even after the usage of latest safety equipments today. This calls for improved construction site safety for the benefit of the numerous persevering workers. But this can not come about by itself. Construction safety training has to be taken far more seriously.

A construction site is a place filled with dust, fumes and sparks; the rapidly variable environment of a construction site makes it even more difficult for the construction workers to maintain construction health and safety.

There are certain construction hazards that the workers face in their work sites. These include the following:

· Sound Pollution: Most of the construction sites use a lot of noise making machines that include power drills, construction vehicles, vertical lifts etc. These produce a lot of noise that have a tremendously adverse effect on the ear drums of the construction workers. This produces a muffling effect and unless the workers take proper construction health and safety precautions, they are likely to suffer from temporary deafness and worse, even permanent hearing loss.

· Air Pollution: Construction sites usually have a lot of dust and smoke in the vicinity. It is advisable for occupational safety that the construction workers wear masks or else in later life they may suffer from excessive exposure to lead, asbestos and other such materials. Excessive exposure to asbestos can cause severe asbestosis among the workers. They may even suffer from lung disorders and in certain cases construction workers have been known to die of lung cancer.

The high amount of smoke and dust can cause a lot of irritation in the eyes, unless the worker uses some kind of protective eye gear constant exposure to the toxic fumes can have long term effects on the eyes.

The job of a construction worker entails a lot of work pressure and they have to face a lot of life and death situations throughout the day. There are certain occupational safety instruments that are mandatory for the construction workers to use while they are at work. Some of these equipments include:

Safety helmets: This standard part of the construction worker's work clothes. A construction site poses a lot of risks to the people working there; construction safety instruments like helmets provide a lot of protection to the worker from falling objects.

Safety harness: The job of a construction worker has many occupational hazards that require him to climb on top of tall buildings; a safety harness is a very secure way for the workers to keep them from falling off and injuring themselves. Most of the construction firms have now made it mandatory for all the workers to carry a protective harness while working in tall buildings.

Nowadays besides construction site work place safety, most of the construction firms have their workers covered against accidents. They also provide protection from other medical conditions that the worker may suffer from the hazards that they face in their work environment.
